The Mid-South Chapter has been busy this quarter with member engagement and career and business advancement! We’ve been down to Birmingham and back up to Huntsville to provide networking opportunities and professional development seminars.  Here’s some highlights from our last events:Jennifer Hamaker

For our Birmingham seminar, Mr. Benny Wink of Blue Cross Blue Shield of Alabama hosted the meeting. Ms. Jennifer Hamaker, a Chapter founding member, was the presenter. Her talk was, “It’s Tailor Time! Tips and Tricks to Getting Your Response to the Finalist Table.” Jennifer shared three of her winning techniques: start snooping, eliminate the boiler plate, and finesse.  You can read her presentation here.

Our March seminar was hosted in Huntsville, with Ms. Becky Weirick as our special guest.  Ms. Weirick spoke to Competitive Contracting with the Army Contracting Command – Redstone Arsenal.  This was our largest seminar audience to date, with over 30 in attendance!  The discussion was lively and enlightening, and attendees walked out with a better understanding of the ACC-Redstone Arsenal process and upcoming pipeline.

See you at our next event!

Chapter Chair Message 2016

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Hello, fellow Mid-South Chapter of APMP members!

Happy New Year to you and your family from the entire Chapter Officer Board.  We hope that you all had a joyful and restful holiday season and are looking forward to 2016 as much as we are.

2016

Looking back at 2015

In 2015, we conducted monthly seminars in Huntsville, Nashville, and Memphis.  We also did a joint seminar with the North Alabama Chapter of PMI.  Seminars covered commercial and defense related topics.  We want to thank all you attended our events.  You helped make them so successful!

We added over 20 new members!  Welcome to everyone and welcome back to all those who continued on with us over this last year. You are what makes this chapter great.

Additionally, we continue to build out our presence across our social media platforms.   We hope you will connect with us on LinkedIn, Twitter, and Facebook.  We post industry news, opportunities, seminar and event information, and APMP specific news.

We conducted a chapter survey in Q4 of 2015 to determine what you thought we did well, what we could improve, and what you wanted in 2016.  We want to extend a huge thank you to those who participated!  We had over a 20% response rate.  Continue reading on for the results and how we will address them in the coming year.

Looking forward to 2016

2016 will continue to be another transformative and growth year for us. We plan on the following in 2016 based on the chapter survey results:

  • The majority of members heard about our chapter from another colleague.  We ask that you continue to spread the word and encourage you to invite a colleague to each of our seminars. We will offer specials throughout the year, e.g., bring a friend and get a seminar meal free!
  • There was interest in moving the meeting time to the lunch hour.  We are seeking venues to do just that so please watch for some lunch time seminars.
  • We’ll continue to go social!  We are a distributed chapter, but that doesn’t mean we can’t keep in touch or share our expertise.  Our LinkedIn group and Facebook has grown with the chapter.  We’ll continue posting to stay in touch with our membership.  Please join us for these online topics and share your expertise and ask your questions to garner feedback from other professionals.
  • We’re planning events based on your feedback such as capture management, pricing, improving evaluation scores, proposal management 101, and round table discussions.  We encourage you to contact our Planning Chair if you would like to see a certain topic presented.  Additionally, we are always looking for speaking volunteers!  Contact our Planning Chair if you would like to present a seminar topic.

We look forward to the many opportunities for you and your businesses grow.

Kind regards,

Chair, Mid-South Chapter of APMP

20151201_180708We held our December seminar on 12/1 as a great way to kick off this holiday month.  Lanier Ford Attorneys at Law J. Dale Gipson and Tracy Marion gave a great overview of the GAO bid protest process and how proposal teams can prepare themselves best for either leveraging the process to submit a protest or adjusting to the process in the event their win is protested. The presentation can be found here.   As an added bonus, the seminar offered attendees a chance to network over great food.

Thanks to our Sponsor Richter & Company for a great September seminar.  Titled “A Pitmaster’s Guide to Price To Win” it was a great presentation that drew parallels between competitive BBQ competitions and the proposal world.  The main points of the seminar focused on understanding the competition (i.e., competitive advantage analysis), understanding the judges (i.e., the source selection committee and potential client), and the art of discrimination and differentiation.  Our speaker, Randy Richter, is a pitmaster and dynamic speaker who provided a great seminar and free samples of his brisket dry rub. Thanks, Randy!

On August 18th, we formally kicked off our joint seminar series with the PMI North Alabama Chapter (NAC).  We extend our thanks to the PMI NAC and our very own Membership Chair, Steve Canerossi, who was the seminar speaker.  APMP_PMI Seminar

The seminar was a great example of today’s business world and how we as proposal managers often wear multiple hats, including that of project / program manager.  Steve drew parallels on leadership best practices between proposal management and project management, allowing seminar attendees from both our chapter and the PMI NAC to walk away with tools that they could immediately employ with their proposal or project teams.

If you missed this great seminar, you may find the materials here.

Our next seminar is on September 9th, with the main sign up information found on our homepage.  We hope to see you there!
